These courses are organized by Regional Anaesthesia UK – RAUK (formerly ESRA UK & Ireland) the official UK national regional anaesthesia society affiliated to ESRA, in conjunction with Sonosite Ltd.

This two-day course is aimed at anaesthetists wishing to improve their skills in UGRA and comprises of didactic lectures covering all commonly used regional techniques, clinical and cadaveric anatomy demonstrations and practical hands-on workshops. Ultrasound For Regional Anaesthesia in Adults and Children
9-10 September 2010 Venue: Liverpool

The course has developed a great deal over the 5 years it has been running.
Registered for 10 CPD points
The emphasis is learning skills that you can take away and apply in practice back at work.
Over 9 hours of hands on workshops over the 2 days.

We try to tailor the sessions to your abilities and your interests.
The faculty comprises both adult and paediatric anaesthetists so whether you wish to discuss how to do a patient for shoulder arthroplasty or trcheooesophageal fistula there is someone with the appropriate experience..

Sixth LSORA London workshops in Regional Anaesthesia

30th September- 1st October  Venue: London

This is the sixth year of our project.
We will formally assess you throughout out the two days with our competency assessment folder.Our course is recognised for the ESRA Diploma.
Lectures, anatomy demonstrations at St George's Anatomy Lab, Video clips and direct discussion with international recognized leaders in the field.
The aim is to attend the great demand for regional anaesthetic techniques. We will keep you interested and busy with a variety of exciting practical activities over two days.
It is an impressive 1:2 ratio between Faculty & Delegate giving you a more personal learning experience. We want to know you ,we want you to know us.

Anatomy lab:
Astonishing well specially prepared specimens  for regional anaesthesia discussion.Anatomy demonstrators and a Professor in Anatomy answering any questions.Six years doing this format.

Simulator Lab:    
This year we have organized a session on local anaesthetic toxicity. We will discuss the guidelines for the management of severe toxicity, including the basic principles of resuscitation and the use of intralipid.
We will also focus on new, pioneering needling techniques.

Hands on practice & Cadaver workshop:
There will be 4 or 5 people in each group and you will spend 45 minutes at each work station. The use of ultrasound is imperative in our workshops, the leaders will demonstrate probe orientation and sono -anatomy. You will have ample opportunity to get 'hands on' scanning time. Needling techniques will be taught using phantom models and we will dedicate extra time to assess delegate performance. With the help of the Anatomy Department at St George's we will teach you the relevant anatomy using our specially prepared specimens. Our demonstrators will teach you boundaries, nerve distribution and will adapt their teaching to the use of regional anaesthesia blocks.

1st LSORA Neuroaxial course in Regional Anaesthesia

20th November 2010  Venue: London

This is the first course in UK reviewing and re-educating the way in which spinals, epidurals and paravertebral blocks are performed using these novel US techniques.
We will give you lectures, demonstrations about how to perform these blocks.
There will be plenty of time for practical experience to practise what has been learn from the anatomy demonstrations. The experts will answer questions and give feedback.

  • Paravertebral blocks- These blocks are extremely important in providing pain relief to patients undergoing thoracic and breast surgery. We will teach not only the block technique but touch on the use of paravertebral catheters to provide extended pain relief
  • Psoas compartment block-Commonly performed for numerous surgical procedures this block is very useful.The anatomy will refreshed and there will be ample time to practise both in plane and out of plane approaches
  • Spinal block -We will show you how to count vertebraes, identify the midline and measure the distance to the subarachnoid space.
  • Epidural space - Further knowledge of the anatomy and US methodology of this space allows a safer approach to epidurals.This is particularly important in the obese and those with prior spinal conditions.

Introductory Ultrasound Guided Regional Anaesthesia

22-23 November 2010 Venue:Hitchin

The two-day introductory course is designed to teach those who have little or no experience in the use of ultrasound in their normal daily practice. The course comprises of didactic lectures on the physics of ultrasound, ultrasound anatomy and regional anaesthesia techniques. The lectures and hands-on sessions will concentrate on the brachial plexus, upper and lower limb blocks.

LSORA Needling course in Regional Anaesthesia

11th December 2010  Venue: London

This is the first course in UK teaching how to needle under ultrasound/nerve stimulator guidance
We will give you lectures ,demonstrations and plenty of exercises about how to perform these blocks.
There will be plenty of time to practice, either with home made phantoms and more avant-garde ones!

  • 3D techniques - International expert will prepare a set of exercises to help you with 3d orientation and with questions and answers and a folder to fill
  • Selection of probes
  • What is new and coming in simulation, needles and assessment in regional anaesthesia
  • How to choose the right probe for each block.What is new in probe design and to get used to them
  • Use of echogenic needles and how to select them
  • We will show you all the different types of needles you can expect to find at present, with the advantages and disadvantages of each.We will teach you how to insert catheters under ultrasound and nerve stimulator guidance
